US Calls for Direct Talks with Iran

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Seyed Mohammad Ali Hosseini said that the US officials in recent months have repeatedly called for talks with Iran about Iraqi issues, specially about security of that country. “They have tried different channels to raise their demand and we are studying these proposals now,” Hosseini said according to a foreign ministry statement.

Elsewhere, he pointed to President Ahmadinejad’s visit to Saudi Arabia, and said that the trip is taking place at the invitation of the Saudi King, Abdallah bin Abd al-Aziz Al Saud.

Regarding the goals pursued in Ahmadinejad’s visit, the diplomat said, “The Islamic Republic of Iran and Saudi Arabia are great nations in the world of Islam and the region, and it is natural for the two states to exchange views and consult about the issues related to the aforementioned two regions.”

He described the visit as a working trip which serves the same ends.
