Egypt official: Abbas assassination video bogus

An Egyptian official has cast doubt on the authenticity of a recently-released Fatah video showing Hamas members planning the assassination of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas via a tunnel bomb, Israel Radio reported on Monday morning.

In an interview with London-based newspaper Al Hayat, the official noted that the youths in the video, who wear shirts with the inscription “Hamas” and are seen digging a tunnel while looking at the camera, have their faces uncovered.

The official questioned why members of a cell planning an assassination would not try to hide their identities and would allow themselves to be filmed.

He added that the video, put out by Abbas’s aides, could only fool “simple people.”
