Russian Communist Party leader to run for presidency

Russian Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov has voiced his intention of joining the presidential race, RIA news agency reported Wednesday“As a politician for whom more than 30 million people have already voted, I must be ready for such a nomination,” he was quoted as saying Wednesday.

The Russian parliament has scheduled the presidential election for March 2, 2008, when President Vladimir Putin is expected to step down due to the constitutional ban on a third consecutive term.

President Putin has not yet nominated any candidate for his post. But Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov, who was promoted by Putin as well as his two first deputies, Dmitri Medvedev and Sergei Ivanov, is presumably on the list.
