Iraqi official terms Ahmadinejad’s visit “very important”

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh said here on Wednesday that the upcoming visit to Iraq of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will be a good opportunity for both neighboring states. Talking to IRNA, he termed the visit as “very important”.

The visit will pave the way for further expansion of all-out ties between the two friendly countries, he added.

He called for Tehran-Baghdad cooperation in different areas including anti-terrorism campaign.

Referring to great potentials in both Iran and Iraq, Saleh underscored the need for further expansion of bilateral political and economic relations.

President Ahmadinejad’s upcoming visit will take place at the official invitation of Iraqi President Jalal Talabani.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said on Sunday that consultations are going on to fix the exact date of the Iranian president’s visit to Iraq.

The visit will take place within the framework of amicable ties between the two neighboring states, he said.

Hosseini had previously said that President Ahmadinejad’s visit would take place in the current Iranian month of Esfand (February 20-March 19).
