Visa issues as Romania readies for Schengen Area

Romania readies to adhere to Schengen Area, a difficult procedure that will impose some limits regarding foreign citizens’ access in Romania, according to Attila Korodi, president of the committee for foreign affairs from the Chamber of Deputies.

The declaration is relevant for the discussions with Moldovan authorities regarding the annulment of some visa requirements for Moldovans, mainly the one that obliges them to prove they have at least 500 euro banked.

Korodi stressed that possibilities to solve this issue would appear after Chisinau’s negotiations with Brussels regarding the EU visa regime facilitation.

Nevertheless, he avoided to assure the aforementioned visa requirement would be annulled after the Moldova-EU dialogue.

His opposite number from Chisinau, Igor Corman assured that both parts were searching for solutions and emphasized this issue is mainly related to the Bucharest-Brussels relationship.

According to Corman, a solution would be citizens’ declarations on personal responsibility about having that money.
Further, both officials expressed their delight with the current state of parliamentary relationship between Chisinau and Bucharest. They plan a series of mutual visits and meetings, including a visit of the commission for culture, education, youth, research, sport and mass-media in Bucharest. Moreover, Speaker Mihai Ghimpu himself will go to Bucharest by the end of April.
