MOLDOVA: MOLDOVAN, ROMANIAN PRESIDENTS DISCUSS TIES

Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin and his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu discussed cooperation in the framework of international
institutions, including GUAM, which unites Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, and the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation.

During Voronin’s visit to Romania, he and Basescu addressed joint energy projects and decided to apply for European Union’s financing of some of
them.

Voronin and Basescu agreed that a bilateral trade and economic cooperation committee will be convened in Bucharest in October.
Basescu voiced support for Moldova’s desire to integrate international organizations.

Romania is prepared to help Moldova implement the EU legal criteria and the Moldova-EU Individual Plan of Actions, he said.

Romania fully supports Moldova’s efforts to settle the Transdniestria conflict.

Voronin and Basescu addressed Transdniestrian settlement in light of the upcoming consultations in Odesa and an international conference in
Chisinau.

Furthermore, Voronin on Monday started a three-day tour of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

Latvian President Vaira Vike-Freiberga, Prime Minister Aigars Kalvitis and the parliament speaker will meet with Voronin on September 26-27.
Other meetings will involve the Riga mayor and representatives of the Moldovan Diaspora.
