Romanian Wages Rise, Despite Slowdown

The average net salary in Romania rose 12.9 percent in the year to January, but declined slightly when compared to the month before, the National Statistics Board reported on Monday.

January’s average salary was Lei 1,355 down by 0.9 percent from December, 2008.

Fast wage growth is a concern for the Romanian government, as it struggles to keep inflation under control.
With European demand slowing and global cash shortages likely to curb investment, most economists predict Romania will face a sharp slowdown in 2009 from last year’s roughly 9 per cent expansion.
