EU justice official expects visa-free regime green light for Serbia

European Union member states are expected to give a green light in December to visa-free travel for Serbia as it has made “relatively satisfying” progress, Justice Commissioner Jacques Barrot said Monday.

“An expert mission will come to Belgrade in mid-October” to assess if Serbia met all the requirements and “if the evaluation is appropriate, I believe that the (EU) Council of Ministers will give the green light” for visa liberalisation, he told AFP.

Serbia said last week it had launched a strategy to fight organised crime, the last EU condition before citizens of the Balkan state can enjoy visa-free travel within the bloc.
