Albanian ‘Word of Honor’ in Ramallah

An exhibition by Norman Gershman, “Word of Honor – Jews Saved during WWII in Albania” has opened in Ramallah.

The exhibition consists of 70 black and white photographs and portraits of Albanian families who saved Jews from persecution during World War II. The selection has already been displayed as part of exhibitions in New York, Washington, Tirana, Buenos Aires, Philadelphia and Strasbourg.

The exhibition highlights the Albanian custom of ‘Honor’, which obliges an individual to protect anyone who is a guest, and prevent them from coming under threat. This is a subject that is widely discussed and depicted in Albanian literature.
