Ahmadinejad: Iran Ready to Help Restore Sustainable Peace in Region

A01173291.jpgTEHRAN (Fars News Agency)- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a phone conversation with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on Monday, voiced Iran’s preparedness to help to the restoration of sustainable peace in the region.

A statement released by the Presidential Press Office said that during the phone conversation, which took place at the initiative of the UN Secretary-General, the two officials discussed the latest developments in the Middle-East, exchanged views about UN Security Council resolution 1701 and reviewed possible ways of establishing an urgent ceasefire in Lebanon.

The two sides also stressed the need for the establishment of stability, sustainable and fair peace and security in the Middle-East region and viewed Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied territories as a necessity.

Also during the phone talk, President Ahmadinejad expressed Iran’s deep concern about Zionist regime’s continued aggressions and strikes on the Palestinians, which he said, are aimed at exerting pressure on the popular and democratically-elected government of Hamas.
