Iran Backs Palestinian National Unity Gov’t

A02051183.jpgSecretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Larijani said that Iran supports the Palestinian national unity government. Larijani was speaking at a joint press conference with the Islamic resistance movement Hamas’ Political Bureau head, Khaled Mesha’al, Iran Daily reported.

“Iran regards Hamas as the real representative of the Palestinian people,” he said.

He further said that in his talks with Hamas, the sides discussed the new situation created for Palestine.

Mesha’al, for his part, said Hamas appreciates Iran’s support for the Palestinian people, its ideals and government, and praised Iran’s support for Hamas in various difficult situations.

The Hamas Political Bureau chief said that in his talks with Iranian officials he briefed them on the Mecca Agreement.

The agreement was brokered in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, by King Abdullah in which Hamas, led by Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, and the Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas, agreed to form a national unity government.

The agreement will play a significant role in stopping bloodshed among the Palestinian people and establish unity and cooperation among them, Mesha’al said.

In response to a question on Iran’s lesser role in efforts to settle the Lebanese and Palestinian crises, Larijani said that in fact Iran has been holding regular consultations with Saudi Arabia on these crises.

“Tehran has adopted diplomatic measures on these cases.” Asked about the regional security conference slated to be held in Tehran next week, the SNSC secretary said that Iran, as an influential country in the region, proposed holding of a security conference of regional countries in Tehran.

“We are ready to make efforts to establish peace and tranquility in the region,” he added.
