Russian troops show no signs of moving

ASD123SDF7.jpgRussian tanks remain parked deep inside Georgia this morning, and there are reports of two more towns being brought under military control.

An armoured column has been seen just 45 kilometres from the capital, shadowed by three helicopter gunships. Other Russian forces are on the move in Georgia well outside the area of conflict covered by the ceasefire.

Russian officers commanding the units said they were not agressive movements, but gave no indication of when they would leave. Beyond the town of Gory Russian soldiers are now believed to control Poti and its naval base, and Zugdidi, near another breakaway region, Abkhazia.

Coming in behind the fighting are Russian sappers, cleaning up after the big Georgian artillery bombardment that triggered this conflict. There are worries about unexploded shells and mines that have become so common and deadly in modern conflicts for civilians. As refugees are being encouraged to return, their fields need to be swept clean of danger.
