Bulgarian Interior Minister: Policemen Protests Went Over Line

According to Bulgaria’s Minister of Interior, Mihail Mikov, Sunday’s policemen protest in Sofia had gone over the line, BTA reports Tuesday.

Mikov said that the Policemen who tore off their uniform shoulder pieces as an act of protest should be removed from law enforcement. This is an insult to every one in the system, not only me, said the minister.

When asked if he thinks that the protests itself was illegal, Mikov said that there is a court that has the authority to determine that. In his words however it is very bad when people from the system of law enforcement consider themselves above the law.

‘What about the regular citizens? How are we supposed to expect them to follow the rules and law when policemen don’t’, said Mikov.

Between 5,000 and 10,000 policemen gathered on a protest in Sofia on Sunday in front of the Czech Embassy building. This was the fourth consecutive protest, as during the first three, the participants smoked cigarettes, stood silent and drank water in sign of protest against the Interior Ministry’s policy.

The rally marched to the houses of the Parliament, as around 30 policemen carried a coffin, symbolically burying the ministry, while organisers handed out red carnations. Once at the site the men in uniform left the coffin and some tore out their uniform shoulder pieces and left them on the ground in front of the building.
