Serbia, Macedonia Must Cooperate

resizer20Despite clear differences regarding Kosovo’s independence, Macedonia and Serbia must focus on their joint interests, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries said Thursday.

Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic arrived today in a fist visit of a Serbian official to neighboring Macedonia after the country recognized the former Serbian province of Kosovo last year thus worsening relations with Belgrade.

“We need to focus on matters of joint interest, not on differences,” said Serbia’s Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic, on his first visit to Macedonia after relations between the two countries hit an all time low after Skopje recognised Kosovo last year.

“At this difficult time, we need to work closely to build a prosperous future,” Jeremic added, after meeting his counterpart Antonio Milososki, saying that both countries share the goal of EU accession.

Milososki added that the two discussed “important bilateral issues on trade, political and culture relations.”

Serbia expelled Macedonia’s ambassador to Belgrade in October 2008 in a protest to the country’s recognition of Kosovo, but signs of reconciliation quickly followed and Macedonia recently appointed a new ambassador to the country.

Jeremic will also meet Macedonia’s outgoing President Branko Crvenkovski and Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski.
