Romania recalls diplomat suspected in fatal Singapore accident

A Romanian diplomat suspected of being involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident in Singapore last month has been recalled by his country’s Foreign Ministry.

The ministry also handed over its findings regarding the accident to Romanian prosecutors and was to conduct an internal investigation into whether Silviu Ionescu, 52, had followed proper diplomatic procedures after the accident.

Inoescu is a suspect in a December 15 accident involving a Romanian embassy car. Tong Kok Wai, 30, died 10 days after the accident from severe brain damage, and two other people were injured.

Ionescu, charge d’affaires to Singapore, the highest-ranking Romanian diplomat in the city-state, had filed a police report that the embassy car had been stolen and left Singapore three days after the accident.

The Romanian ambassador to Singapore, Tokyo-based Aurelian Neagu, said Ionescu was answering questions about his activities in Singapore and was at the disposal of the ministry.
