The Netherlands still against Romania, Bulgaria’s Schengen accession

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte has said that the Netherlands will oppose Romania and Bulgaria’s entry into the Schengen zone until they implement reforms.

A decision requires unanimity among member nations of the Schengen visa-free travel zone.

Rutte said before Thursday’s opening of an EU summit in Brussels that Romania and Bulgaria must first do more to reform their justice systems and combat corruption.

The Netherlands and Finland have been at the forefront of moves to keep the two nations out of the Schengen zone.
