Fugitive Peruvian Minister Sparks Row in Albania

Albania’s opposition has accused the government of harbouring Peru’s fugitive ex-Foreign Minister Augusto Blacker Millier after he was revealed to be in Albania.Opposition Socialist MP Erion Brace accused the government of Prime Minister Sali Berisha of protecting Millier, who is wanted in Peru for his involvement in a coup.

“[Berisha] is involved head to toe in the protection of the Peruvian minister wanted by Interpol,” Brace said.

“Berisha is hosting him, protecting him, and is also helping him to set up a business,” he added.

Millier, who is accused by prosecutors in Lima of being involved in the coup staged by former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori in 1992, is currently involved in a project to build a waste incinerator in the town of Fier, in southern Albania.

But one of the prime minister’s aides said he had nothing to do with the fugitive Peruvian and that the incinerator project had been pushed by the Socialist mayor of Fier, Baftaj Zeqo.

Albanian business registration records show that Millier owns 80 per cent of a local company, Apollonia Investments, registered in Tirana and set up in July 2012.

His presence in Tirana was revealed after Peruvian media reported his possible arrest.

However, Albanian police on Sunday denied that they had detained him.

“Millier is not [on Interpol’s] list of international fugitives,” police spokesperson Tefik Sulejmani said in a statement.
