US Senate drafts resolution to allow military intervention in Syria

The United States Senate has drafted a bipartisan use-of-force resolution that imposes a 90-day deadline for military intervention in Syria and bars the use of US troops on the ground there.

Congress this week is debating President Barack Obama’s push for a military response to what he says was Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s use of chemical weapons against his own people last month on the outskirts of Damascus.

The draft Senate resolution from the foreign relations committee has reworded a White House draft to support use of force in a ”limited and tailored manner against legitimate military targets” during a 60-day period following enactment, with a possible 30-day extension at the President’s request.
