Tunisian President meets Obama in New York

Tunisian Caretaker president Moncef Marzouki met on Monday evening in New York with US president Barack Obama who expressed his country’s unconditional commitment to support Tunisia in speeding up the completion of the transitional process so that it might be a model in the region.

The meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the opening of the high-level meeting on the US initiative to support civil society in the world, allowed to discuss bilateral relations and means to develop them .

The US president reiterated support to the democratic transition in Tunisia and the efforts made by Tunisia’s people to have their revolution crowned with success and with the setting up of democratic institutions up to this historical event.

Obama expressed care for Marzouki’s efforts to smoothe out difficulties inherent in democratic change in Tunisia and reach consensus between all the stakeholders.

At the opening of the high-level meeting, President Obama paid tribute to Tunisia, Mexico, Mongolia and Tanzania for their support to the civil society, allowing for promoting social life in their respective countries, in addition to their efforts in disseminating human rights culture and promoting health and education.

Marzouki is in New York from September 22 to 28, to attend the 68th United Nations General Assembly.
