Saudi Arabia turns down UNSC seat

imgSaudi Arabia has turned down a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council, accusing the world body of failing to deal with the Syrian crisis.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said that the UN needs to be reformed, and in particular the Security Council.

The statement was made hours after Saudi Arabia was elected for the first time to be one of the 10 rotating UN Security Council members, for a term of 2 years.

“Work mechanisms and double-standards on the Security Council prevent it from carrying out its duties and assuming its responsibilities in keeping world peace. Therefore Saudi Arabia has no other option but to turn down Security Council membership until it is reformed and given the means to accomplish its duties”, said the Foreign Ministry in a statement.
