Clashes resume between the Interior Ministry and the National Guard in Sweida

Renewed clashes between local factions in Sweida, and between the internal security forces, affiliated to the Syrian Ministry of Interior, in the western countryside of Sweida, on Saturday, January 17.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Daraa reported that the clashes between the two parties began on Friday evening, January 16, and continued until Saturday morning.

The clashes included mortar shells, 23-caliber anti-aircraft missiles, and drones, and damage was limited to physical on both sides. According to the reporter.

The Media Relations Office in Sweida province told Enab Baladi that “outlaw groups,” as he described it, renewed the violation of the ceasefire in Sweida.

This was by targeting the homes of civilians in the town of Al-Mazraa in the western countryside of Sweida with mortars and anti-23 calibers, which led to material damage to homes today.

The office pointed out that the source of the targeting, elements of the “National Guard”, belonging to the spiritual head of the Druze community, Hikmat al-Hijri, stationed in the neighboring village of Majdal.

The violations of the ceasefire by them are repeated on an almost daily basis, and the residents of the town of Al-Mazraa complain about these violations, calling on the Syrian state to deter those groups by finding solutions, most notably controlling the village of Majdal and expelling the armed groups from it, the office added.

The village is one of the most prominent points of breaches and dangerously makes the lives of civilians in the town of Al-Mazraa.

On the other hand, two civil sources in Sweida confirmed to Enab Baladi that the government forces fired a mortar shell at the beginning, on the town of Al-Mazraa, followed by a response by the National Guard forces.

The damage was limited to materials, as the accessories of “mortar” shells, “shrapnel” and heavy weapons shots, houses and cars were hit, according to the sources.

A member of the National Guard forces was killed in Sweida, following renewed clashes between the National Guard of the spiritual head of the Almohad Druze community, Hekmat al-Hijri, and the internal security forces of the Syrian Ministry of Interior, in the western countryside of the city, on January 9.

Enab Baladi correspondent in Daraa reported that the clashes continued for several hours, in the axis of the town of Majdal in the western countryside of Sweida.

In turn, the director of the Public Relations Office in the province of Sweida, Qutaiba Azzam, told Enab Baladi, that the clashes between the two parties began at dawn that day, on the axis of the town of Majdal and the transport company in the western countryside of Sweida.

The result of the clashes is killed and a number of wounded in the ranks of the National Guard, on the other hand, there are no injuries or deaths in the ranks of the Internal Security, Azzam explained.

For his part, a civil source in Sweida, Enab Baladi reported that the Internal Security Forces began firing mortar shells on the opposite side of them in the countryside of Sweida.

He confirmed the death of a member of the “National Guard” forces, and the injury of a member, after the firing of shells, and then began clashes between the two sides using heavy machine guns, according to the source.

While the National Guard issued a statement at the time, accusing the Syrian government forces of carrying out a series of field violations, including the firing of mortar shells and shooting from heavy machine guns caliber 23 mm from the direction of the town of Mansoura towards the northwestern axis of the city, in addition to the use of sniper weapons, killing one of its members.
