Greece objects Fuele’s use of name Macedonia

Greek Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas urged EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele to use the interim reference “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia”.

Droutsas is displeased that Commissioner Fuele calls Macedonia by its constitutional name.

“Fuele has to use the name Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The use of any other name constitutes a breach of the framework hailed by the European Union itself. It gives a wrong message to the authorities and the people of our neighboring country and also undermines the ongoing negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations,” Droutsas said.

He added that Greece pledges good cooperation with the newly appointed Commissioner, but in line with the existing international law and the EU’s interest.
