Turkish President Abdullah Gül has joined a chorus of demands by Turkish officials from the European Union to ease visa restrictions for his country’s citizens, a matter on which Turkey thinks it is being treated unfairly.
Gül said entrepreneurs, students and artists are among those affected and that they are treated unfairly.
Speaking in Vienna on Monday, Gül told reporters that Turkey had joined a customs union with the European Union 16 years ago and that “our gates are open.” He added that every member of the 27-nation bloc should reconsider starting talks with Turkey on visa-free travel.
Gül is on an official trip to Austria.
