Iranian ambassador to Lebanon says US Congress should reject the use of force in Syria

The U.S. Congress should reject the use of force in Syria in order to protect regional peace, the Iranian ambassador to Lebanon said Thursday.

Congress must follow U.S. President Barack Obama’s “rational” policy, Ghazanfar Roknabadi said after a meeting with Adnan Mansour, the caretaker foreign minister.

Obama decided to seek congressional approval ahead of an anticipated military strike on Syria in retaliation for the alleged use of chemical weapons against civilians by the Syrian regime.

Roknabadi said there was no evidence that Damascus used chemical weapons, calling it an illogical action due to the presence of U.N. inspectors in Syria at the time.

Roknabadi said there was worldwide opposition to a potential strike in Syria and reiterated his country’s opposition to chemical weapons.
