Karzai calls on presidential candidates to reach agreement for unity govt

Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday urged presidential candidates Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai and Abdullah Abdullah to reach an agreement soon on a national unity government.

Mr. Abdullah rejected the results of the June 14 presidential runoff, accusing the election committee, the government and Mr. Ghani’s camp of fraud.

“The term of the (current) government is over, and I ask the two dear candidates to reach an agreement for a national unity government,” Mr. Karzai said.

“Afghanistan needs a new government and they should reach a result even today,” he said.
