Speaker hopes Larijani and Velayati will run for parliament

Parliament Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel said here on Tuesday that if Ali Larijani and Ali Akbar Velayati decide to run for legislative elections and find a seat in parliament then “The eighth Majlis will be strengthened.”

Intensive attempts are underway in the conservative camp to convince former Supreme National Security Council secretary Ali Larijani and former foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati to run for parliament.

“Any individual who believes he can serve the country through presence at the Majlis should run for the election,” Haddad-Adel told reporters at a news conference.

The speaker said he himself feels a commitment to run for the election.

Registration of candidates for the parliamentary elections started across the country on Saturday and will continue for a week.

The eighth Majlis election is scheduled to be held on March 14, 2008.

Candidates should regard the Supreme Leader’s advices on the extent of their promises to people, the Majlis speaker noted.

Even the MPs sometimes make certain promises which are not within their authority and there is no guarantee that they can be fulfilled, therefore people will lose trust in the government, he explained.

“We are proud that people’s choice is respected in our country,” he stated.
