Interior Ministry arrests Idlib crime perpetrator

The Syrian Ministry of Interior announced the arrest of the perpetrator of the mass murder, which killed five people, inside a house in the village of Deir al-Sharqi in the countryside of Maarat al-Nu’man in Idlib, on January 29.

The ministry said in its statement, published on Sunday evening, February 1, that the Internal Security Directorate in the Rastan area in the countryside of Homs, was able to arrest the person involved in the crime, which it described as “horrific”, which resulted in the death of his wife and son among the dead, and the injury of four others.

The person involved in the commission of the crime and his hiding from view, based on the initial investigation with him, reported that the crime resulted from a family dispute related to marital problems.

The ministry added that the security teams were able to arrest the perpetrator of the crime while trying to flee outside Syria.

The arrested person was transferred to Idlib province and handed over to the Internal Security Command there to complete the investigations, in preparation for his referral to the competent judiciary, according to the statement.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Idlib reported that the crime (according to the testimony of residents in the town) came after sharp differences between the suspect and his wife, which prompted her to go to her family’s house.

As a result, the husband went to the family home amid information that he had killed five people: the perpetrator’s wife, the wife’s sister, the wife’s brother, and two sons of the suspect.

The head of the Internal Security in Idlib province, Brigadier General Ghassan Bakir, explained at the time that the preliminary investigations indicate the involvement of a person in the incident that occurred after family disputes related to marital problems, before fleeing.

Bakir said that as part of the immediate follow-up to the incident, information was received on Thursday evening, January 29, that there was a shooting inside one of the houses.

After the investigation and the collection of forensic evidence and field data, it was found that the incident occurred as a result of the victims’ families being shot, which killed five people and injured four, and the bodies and injured were transferred to Maarat al-Nu’man Hospital.

Preliminary investigations also showed the suspected husband who left the crime scene after it took place.

Another incident in Damascus

The crime in Idlib was accompanied by a murder in Damascus that killed the artist Hoda Shaarawi inside her home in the capital Damascus, according to the Syrian Interior Ministry.

The ministry said in an official statement that the preliminary investigations indicate the involvement of the domestic worker in the incident, which occurred out of theft, before fleeing to an unknown destination.

Preliminary investigations also showed the suspicion of her maid, of Ugandan nationality, who left the house after the crime, and as a result, the competent units followed the movements of the suspect, and managed to arrest her, according to a subsequent statement of the Interior Ministry.

During the investigation, she confessed to committing the crime, while investigations continue to reveal the motives and circumstances of the crime in preparation for referring the file to the competent judiciary.
