Russia: Georgia might be Iran platform

BRUSSELS, Sept. 17 (UPI) — The Russian envoy to NATO suggested Wednesday the United States is planning to attack Iran through Georgia.

Dmitry Rogozin made his charge at a news conference in Brussels, the RIA Novosti news agency reported. He said Russian intelligence agencies have found evidence the United States has made preparations to use Georgia as a staging area.

Russia is opposed to Georgian membership in NATO and to the country’s pro-Western president, Mikheil Saakashvili.

“This is another reason why Washington values Saakashvili’s regime so highly,” Rogozin said. “Georgia’s president is ready to make his nation a virtual hostage of a risky military gamble.”

Iran is under U.N. sanctions because of its nuclear program.
