4 militants killed in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The U.S. military says its troops have killed four al-Qaeda-linked militants during a raid in eastern Afghanistan.

The military says in a statement that its troops were targeting militants who assisted local Taliban leaders bring Arab and other foreign fighters into Afghanistan.

The raid happened in Zormat district of Paktia province on Thursday. None of the militants killed were identified.

More than 5,400 people — mostly militants — have died in insurgency-related violence this year in Afghanistan, according to a tally by The Associated Press of figures provided by Afghan and international officials.
